It’s summertime — the time of flip-flops, pool parties, salt in the air, and sand in the hair. Especially for those of us in the northern hemisphere, summer is the most anticipated time of the year. However while the air feels lighter, and sometimes you’re inclined to just kick back without a care in the world, I’m going to be the voice of reason here and remind you to please take care of your skin!
Nowadays you have to be mindful of the dangers of prolonged exposure to the sun. While what you may want is tanned, smooth, and glowing skin in the summer, the reality can be somewhat different as you tackle sweat, sunburn, and the risk of premature aging. The burning UVB rays are stronger in the summer. And if you’re fair-skinned, even a slight suntan is a sign of sun damage on a cellular level.
UV radiation (all year round) causes skin to age in several ways. It causes stem cells to die off. It also activates enzymes that break down collagen and elastin. All this leads to the thinning and wrinkling of the skin, spider veins, and sunspots.
I recommend wearing a broad-spectrum sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or higher. This applies especially to the face, and not just in the summer but all year round. However, if you’ve neglected using an SPF moisturizer in the winter, now is definitely the time to start. Also, remember to wear sunglasses and a wide-brimmed hat, and seek shade whenever possible. If you can, avoid the sun altogether between 10am and 3pm.
In addition to applying sunscreen regularly, make sure you drink plenty of water in the summer. Hot and dry outdoor air, as well as more time spent in air-conditioned buildings, can suck the moisture out of your skin. In order to calculate how much water per day you need, you can divide your body weight (lbs) in half and drink that many ounces of water. If you do get sunburned, drink even more water and apply moisturizer more frequently to minimize the damage to the skin.
Additionally, antioxidants are very important. Most often we hear about consuming antioxidants through food, which improves our overall health and nutrition. Antioxidants are an essential ingredient for skin health too. Applying creams with antioxidants can help ensure that your cells get the nutrients they need to battle free radicals from sun damage. Ingredients like vitamin C help brighten the skin and reduce pigmentation, especially in the summer.
I hope these tips help you take better care of the skin. However, even with the most careful skincare regimen, many of us still find some damage to the skin following the warmer months. Sunspots, freckles, and wrinkles can be unavoidable.
Here at Juno Medi Spa, we offer the latest non-surgical facial rejuvenation techniques. We offer painless and non-ablative treatments to prevent and improve premature skin aging, remove unwanted pigmentation, help collagen and elastin production, brighten and improve skin tone, color, and texture. Unlike the more invasive laser procedures, the treatments described do not remove the top layer of skin, and they provide quick and natural results.
It is important to note that these procedures are best done during the fall, usually toward the end of September, when the sun is not so hot. Call today to schedule your free consultation.
