What is ResurFX?

ResurFX is a non-ablative fractionated laser that uses focused energy of light to penetrate through the skin without damaging the skin’s surface. Working at the specific depth to stimulate collagen production, ResurFX forces the body to repair itself, shrinks the area of stretch marks, and corrects pigmentation in the skin over the problem area.

Why we get stretch marks

Stretch marks are common, and they’re also notoriously hard to get rid of without a medical procedure such as ResurFX. While it’s not exactly clear what causes stretch marks, it’s likely caused by hormonal influences. They can develop during periods of rapid growth during puberty, pregnancy, quickly increased muscle bulk, or weight gain.

What happens during a ResurFX treatment?

The ResurFX stretch mark reduction treatment is a quick, convenient, in-office treatment. The laser is able to target the exact shape of the stretch mark to properly level and improve it. Your skin will be cleansed and then numbed using a topical cream. Once you’re numb, the laser will be administered to your stretch marks.

The laser is housed in a hand-held device that resembles a small hair dryer. This will be pressed onto your skin to treat the stretch marks, and while it does get fairly hot, ResurFX uses specialized cooling technology to allow your surface skin to cool while heating up tissues inside. Some patients describe the feeling of the laser as small pricks on the skin.

Depending on the area treated, your session will take anywhere from 15 to 30 minutes. We usually recommend 3 to 4 treatments spaced 4 to 6 weeks apart, depending on severity of the problem. However, many of our patients see improvement after 1 or 2 treatments.

Aftercare and downtime

Other than a feeling of warmth and mild swelling in the treated areas, there’s no downtime and you can return to work or social engagements soon after the treatment. A little irritation on the skin is normal, and typically lasts for about one day following treatment. You may also experience itching, peeling, and/or flaking which can last 7 to 10 days. It’s very important during this time to keep the area moisturized. We recommend lubricating the area extensively with a post-treatment salve such as Aquaphor®.
